What No One Tells YOU About Stress

Jul 29, 2022

Stress affects us all. You may notice symptoms of stress when disciplining your kids, during busy times at work, or when coping with a challenging relationship. Stress is everywhere. And while a little stress is OK -- some stress is actually beneficial -- too much stress can wear you down and make you sick, both mentally and physically.

The first step to controlling stress is to know your symptoms of stress. But recognizing stress symptoms may be harder than you think. Most of us are so used to being stressed, we often don't know we are stressed until we are at the breaking point. Also, what causes stress in one person may be of little concern to another. Our bodies are designed to handle small doses of stress. But, we are not equipped to handle long-term, chronic stress without ill consequences.

The effects of stress tend to build up over time. Taking practical steps to maintain your health and outlook can reduce or prevent these effects. The following are some tips that may help you to cope with stress:

  • Seek help from a qualified mental health care provider if you are overwhelmed, feel you cannot cope, have suicidal thoughts, or are using drugs or alcohol to cope.
  • Stay in touch with people who can provide emotional and other support.
  • Recognize signs of your body's response to stress, such as difficulty sleeping, increased alcohol and other substance use, being easily angered, feeling depressed, and having low energy.
  • Note what you have accomplished at the end of the day, not what you have been unable to do.
  • Avoid dwelling on problems
  • Exercise regularly-just 30 minutes per day of gentle walking can help boost mood and reduce stress.
  • Schedule regular times for fun and relaxing activities.
  • Explore stress coping programs, which may incorporate meditation, yoga, or tai chi.

What if YOU had a simple tool that could teach you how to de-stress in less than a minute?
