The Most Underrated Skill of 2026: Knowing When to Exhale

Every January, we're taught to inhale.

Take on more. Set bigger goals. Dream bigger dreams. Push harder.

And for a while, it works. January energy carries us into February. Momentum into March. Determination through April.

Then suddenly it's June. The calendar says we're halfway through the year and a lot of us are carrying twice what we were six months ago. More responsibility. More pressure. More noise.

Here's the strange thing. Most of us are taught how to inhale. Almost none of us are taught how to exhale. And every healthy system depends on both.

The ocean moves in and out. The heart contracts and releases. The breath comes in and goes out. Nature never rushes one half of the cycle and skips the other.

Only humans do that.

We celebrate adding. We rarely celebrate letting go. We admire the people who carry more and overlook the ones wise enough to put something down.

Lately I've been asking a different question. Not "What else do I want to accomplish this year?" but "What no longer belongs in the second half of it?"

That's a very different conversation.

Maybe it's an old belief. Maybe a commitment that no longer fits. Maybe the pressure to do everything perfectly. Maybe the habit of putting yourself last.

Because sometimes growth doesn't come from adding. Sometimes it comes from making space.

My brother Brad taught me a lot during his cancer journey. One thing stays with me: time is precious. 

Watching someone fight for more time changes how you spend your own. It stops you from asking how much you can fit into a life. It makes you ask what deserves a place in it.

I don't want to rush into the second half of the year. Do you?

Take one slow breath with me.

Then ask yourself: What needs to be exhaled before I inhale what's next?

The answer may be the most important thing we discover all year.
